Consumer shipping a car by train FAQs

When you choose to ship your vehicle by train, it will likely be slower than shipping it by truck. So if the cost is a prevailing factor, and you are not in a hurry to get your car back, then shipping by train is a good option. Depending on the distance and where the final destination is, it might take up to a few weeks for your car to arrive. Typically trains will wait till they fill up all the available space and won’t depart till they do. Again, if you need a quick transit, driving or shipping by truck might be better, but if you have time to wait, shipping your car by train might make sense as a more environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution.

How do I find a reputable car shipping company?

If you’re unsure where to start with finding a company that will transport a car by train, use our Auto Transport center to get car shipping quotes. Many car shipping companies offer additional options beyond truck shipping or will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Why would I want to ship my car by train?

Shipping your car by train can often be less expensive than other options, such as shipping by truck or driving it yourself. It may also make sense if you’re moving other things by train and it could be safer. You will also save on fuel and tolls and minimize the risk of an accident. And it could be the most eco-friendly option available.

Does my car have to be in working condition?

Yes. You have to be able to drive it to and from the train hub at the departure and the arrival, respectively.

Is the cost determined by size?

Yes, the bigger and the heavier the car the more it will cost to ship it.

Can I ship more than one car?

Yes. You can ship multiple cars of different sizes. Cars, vans, trucks and SUVs are allowed on Amtrak trains. Amtrak also accepts motorcycles, small trailers, limos and jet skis. They are considered specialized vehicles. Call 1-877-SKIP-I-95 (1-877-754-7495) to book.

When is shipping my car by train not a good idea?
